Building Immersive Training

How we create useful content.

ExR is looking to inspire medical professionals with immersive education.

To achieve this, we work collaboratively with both MedTechs and Trusts to curate truly immersive training experiences.

We leverage collaborator expertise, from both a product knowledge and medical procedure perspective and use this to build VR scenarios that perfectly reflect real-life scenarios so that users can build the required technical competencies.

Filming is a crucial component of VR creation, and our in-house specialists apply both 360-degree and 6DOF (degrees of freedom) filming to capture the content that will become the foundation of your extended reality film.

The Creation Process

360° Films

  • Pre-production

The initial step involves a consultation with you to discuss the procedures you seek to capture, including what are the key learning outcomes you want to achieve from your co-created content.

From there, ExR will begin production planning to source/organise key pieces of equipment that will deliver on the agreed outcomes. For example, is a head-mounted camera needed to film specific angles, or where is the optimal position for robotic cameras?

  • Paperwork

To establish agreed outcomes and working practices in a more formal format, we have developed a co-creation agreement that will be drafted specific to your project and signed by decision-makers in your team.

We'll also collect release forms during the shoot, to align with best practice by all on-camera participants.

  • Shoot

Once signed, a shoot date will be confirmed that aligns with the schedules of those needed on the day.

On the day, a one-person crew will arrive on site and set up within 30 minutes.

Our specialist will then commence filming, all whilst being minimally disruptive to the procedure/training that is taking place. Our crew member can film up to ten short simulations in one day.

  • Edit and publish

The footage is then edited by our experts and sent back for final approval.

Once the film has been approved, it will be hosted and immedistly available on the ExR platform through a browser or within a headset running the ExR app.

We don't hang about. In most cases this happens the day after the shoot.

The Creation Process

Full (6DoF) Simulations

  • Storyboarding

Six Degrees Of Freedom simulations utilise 360° footage, which act as a reference point for the immersive 'serious game' to be built upon.

From there, our team will storyboard the procedure, breaking every stage down into individual steps. For example, it could be picking up a medical bottle as one step, and the next would be the twisting off the cap.

  • User interactions

Next, we will identify each user interaction or mechanics within these steps. This involves more granular elements such as a left-hand screw, pinch, push, twist or pull.

Once these have been defined, we will design tutorial cards to scope illustration, text, and voice-over requirements.

If a voice-over is required, a script will be developed and sent to a chosen expert for recording.

  • 3D Artwork

The content is then passed to our 3D artist who will model all items and make any necessary environment changes in our existing spaces or develop an entirely new environment.

Existing spaces in our portfolio include operating theatres, reception, ward, treatment room, and consultation room.

Then we export 2D models from the tutorial cards.

  • The code bit

Afterwards, we import simulation steps into ExR API and toolkit and begin simulation within the ExR framework.

This enables the iterative, modular development process to take place, where we will build out each step, using existing user interactions or developing bespoke movements for new elements or unique equipment.

  • Testing and release

Once all of this has been finalised, we will begin Beta testing with our co-creation partner or subject-matter expert.

Once approved, we will publish the simulation on the ExR platform for immediate use by NHS, pushing any necessary updates to the hardware stores so that all users of the platform can take advantage of the new content.
