The UK’s medical technology (MedTech) sector turns over approximately £30 billion each year. The figure is only going to swell as the healthcare sector’s adoption of digital tools and technologies intensifies, catalysing competition among MedTechs. Whilst the ultimate aim of medical technology is to empower better patient outcomes, cash is the bloodstream of funding the ground-breaking research and development required to do so. Securing contracts with the likes of the NHS (the biggest purchaser of medical technology in the UK), private healthcare providers, and charities is vital to pump device awareness and adoption.
Honing in on the NHS, and whether you’re already enjoying a rewarding relationship with the service or looking to penetrate it, one of the biggest barriers to its MedTech uptake is time. To get the most from the devices used across our clinical settings, users need the highest levels of cognitive understanding – not to mention physical competency. Traditionally, that’s been mired by the sheer number of hours required to allow healthcare professionals to train on equipment and deliver those all-important improved patient outcomes.
Enter virtual reality (VR). The technology lets you virtualise a medical device to develop immersive training available at any time. MedTechs are empowered to differentiate their device(s) from the competition, with an interactive training schedule that accelerates training and adoption whilst eradicating the long-standing issue of time.
Yet it’s not just the end user who benefits. MedTech VR training is hugely advantageous for device manufacturers or sellers, too. Creating a digital twin of your device or equipment makes it far more accessible for users to interact with the technology. From there, they can build operational knowledge and benefit from:
ExR Education’s three co-founders set out to democratise medical device and healthcare education scenarios for the sector’s professionals. Collaboration is at the fore of the content we curate to ensure it’s as targeted and beneficial to those relying on it to support their wider learning. MedTechs partner with us to deliver informative content at scale, accelerating the education process and driving adoption of their unique devices.
All the content on our platform has been developed in partnership with our clients (from MedTech device manufacturers to NHS Trusts). We combine your expertise and insight with our specialist VR knowledge to take medical technology training to the next level.
Our content co-creation process starts with a discussion around the ambitions for the VR training so we’re all aligned on the end goal. We then work with MedTechs to:
We'll also advise you on the best VR delivery form for your training needs. From 360°VR to FullVR (6 Degrees of Freedom), it’s our priority to ensure your immersive training solution captures the device know-how and clinical skills it needs to illustrate.
“Nick [360° Production Specialist and MD] filmed on the day and was very easy to communicate and work with. The simulation was developed relatively quickly, and I was able to test it out and give feedback as it was being developed and subsequently evaluated.”
Holly Mould, Academic Foundation Doctor at Liverpool University NHS Foundation Trust
Medical VR training isn’t a new or unique concept. But the ExR Education platform is.
In a short amount of time, we’ve built a highly engaged user base of MedTech and healthcare professionals, including some of the country’s most expert surgeons. We host hundreds of immersive VR experiences, all freely accessible for NHS employees. Many of the medical device manufacturers we’ve co-created training content with allow us to place their technologies alongside other relevant and educational content, exposing your device to our user base of [number].
The more your device (and brand) is seen by your primary, target audience, the more likely it is for awareness of the product to surge.
“If this [ExR Education] is going to be a huge repository of scenarios, it’s going to be an amazing resource for us and the wider training community. They [ExR Education] are so accommodating and willing to work with you to make more content! It feels like the possibilities are endless!”
Liz Leggott, Project Manager at South Yorkshire Primary Care Workforce and Training Hub
